my first AC game was Wild World. I would constantly speak to my villagers and they would always say new stuff, it was amazing. One day i noticed a repeated line of dialogue and i distinctly remember saying “ah-ha! so they’re not infinite!!”. Now enter New Horizons, where god forbid you have 2 villagers with the same personality type. They’re just mindless puppets strolling around. The whole focus of the game is just decorating, and villagers are yet another piece of furniture to make your place look superficially pretty.

New Leaf was like, a whole fucking reboot of who I was a person. I remember being up at like 3am playing city folk as a little kid cuz I was scared of my brothers teasing me for liking it, but when my mom got me a 3ds and new leaf, it was like it was a diary or something. It helped me look into who I am, what I wanna be, my future. Me and my friend put damn near 1000 hours each into this game and it is by far my most played game ever. This game is such a huge part of who I am, and I would buy this game 1000 times over. But it also gave me a fetish for furries so 0/10 ruined my life.

About 7 months ago my 3DS XL suddenly turned off. It would not turn back on. I tried to get it to work so much. but nothing happened. Now 7 months today. I just ordered a new 3DS XL. Right when I get it. I will throw Animal Crossing;New Leaf into my 3DS and play for 1,000 hours. They will say something like. "EMILY! We haven't seen you in months!". Tears of joys man.

Honestly the fact that Pelly and Phyllis were replaced WITH A STAND makes me tear up. I loved those characters so much. And I remember the first time I went to the island in NH, I got so emotional when I heard Kappn’ sing his little shanty. New leaf was TOO GOOD.

Honestly, the biggest thing that struck me about New Leaf vs New Horizons was the tree. Remember? When you start your town in New Leaf, you plant a ceramonial tree in the town plaza that you get to watch grow. And when your town is a year old, you get a statue of that tree in celebration for you achievement of building and cultivating this community. Watching that tree grow was more rewarding than earning Nook Miles will ever be.

The new leaf soundtrack is the best soundtrack in gaming. You can’t change my mind. The ugly synth sounds in New Horizons all sound the same and you can barely distinguish some pieces of hourly music from the other in that game. But new leafs music I feel is so carefully crafted and it perfectly fits the vibe of each hour you play in the game, the music for the early hours of the game was beautiful, you can feel the slowness in time that those times of the night gives you. It’s really pretty and it’s one of the things I miss the most.

Waking up early, finding fossils, talking to Goldie and Mitzie, getting a Brewster coffee to go, picking a stray weed, shaking trees, watering flowers...ahh what simple, beautiful memories.

Everything is so overly "realistic" in New Horizons and I miss all the quirky stuff in the old games. Like for example, now there's a chessboard item which is neat but it removed all the giant chess items. Having a giant king piece pretty much double the height of the player character was so silly. Or how the Gyroids now. They're all ~aesthetic~ & unintrusive now. But in the old games they used to be big & strange. I just miss that kind of energy the game had.

Man.. i miss the mini games. Staying up late at night and playing with a ton of strangers and silently yelling at them when they were acting dumb, but loving to make new friends and find glitches in the game with them. Once i was with those friends and glitched into the railroad, it was the most amazing feeling and my strongest memory from childhood. I want to go back...

This was my first animal crossing game, and it got me through a lot. I am Puerto Rican and for those that don't know, we got hit with hurricane Maria in 2017, which left the island in a state of disrepair. I was left without electricity or water for 3 months. Amidst all the chaos, this was my comfort game, the one place I could escape to. Getting my 3ds charged was a bit tricky, but I always found a way. The one thing I looked forward to when I got back home from school was playing new leaf.

New Horizons was too focused on single player and decorating. The villagers had never been more repetitive and one dimensional. I felt like there was more to see and do in the GameCube version. It took months to get features new leaf had at launch, and many features it just never got. It finally gave us a outside only vendor area somewhat similar to main street. But it was off island, behind a longer loading screen and you could only go there by yourself

I remember buying New Leaf and absolutely loving it but being upset about how sugar-coated the villagers were in comparison to the other games. it briefly almost ruined the game for me since that was my favorite part of the series, but it totally won me over since I was like 9 at the time. oh boy if I would've known about the villagers in new horizons smh lol

I don’t think there is a word to describe how new leaf makes us feel. Even thinking of the game, I just feel so warm and spirited. It genuinely changed my life. I think it’s saved me on multiple occasions and that sounds a little silly but from the age of 7 it has been my remedy for everything. The music like you said was quite something. The closeness to your villagers and the detail of all parts of their personality was a major part of the game, whilst nh feels so distant and robotic. On my way to play.

There’s something intimate about the older games, for me new leaf, where I don’t feel like I have to make my town “look good” or compare with other people’s. There was something private and genuinely joyful about logging on and seeing your community. It felt like a second life. New horizons is great for creativity, but it has none of the soul and coziness of the old games. It’s just never going to compare in that respect.
