I remember crying three times the first time I played this game. Once when Sophia reads her letter (cue Iris music box version) and then when Folsense fades into its true state (because of the music), and finally in the credits seeing what happens with all of the characters (specifically when Anton and his brother are reunited). I don't cry all that often but these games sneak in some plot element that kills me every time.

I think one of the saddest things in this game is the fact that Anton never even knew he had a daughter until she had been dead for years. They were never given the chance to meet, she grew up and died, all while her father never even knew his wife had been pregnant. And the game sort of just glosses over this, which is a shame. Sophia's letter even avoids the subject because she couldn't bare to break it to Anton that he never got the chance to meet his daughter.

You realise how traumatised Layton was by Claire's death when you notice that he never brings up Claire's death until it becomes absolutely necessary. Sure early in the game he tells Luke about 'somebody he used to know', but he never mentions she's dead. And when they start investigating the lab explosion ten years ago Layton doesn't mention Claire directly, he just says that 'though many perished in the accident'. Poor guy was so emotionally damaged by her death he doesn't bring it up until Luke asks when they exit the Towering Pagoda in Chapter 8 or 9, I think it is (when they start working with Don Paolo).

Ngl i cried at the end of the game. It was so touching and the twist was epic. The story of Anton and Sophia was so adorable and tragic especially when they read the letter. Unwound/Lost was my first and favorite but P/D box was super touchinggT^T

i remember sitting on my floor in my bedroom when i was like 8 or 9 playing through the ending to this game and being more emotional than i wanted to admit. the end theme especially iris have always stuck in my mind even like 8 years later and when i play the game now the combo of plot, music and nostalgia leaves me fully sobbing. my fucking heart.

See when I finished the game and found out everyone was just knocked out and not dead after the tear jerking ending I was legit screeching IS ANDREW ALIVE???? HES GOTTA BE RIGHT??? And I’m so glad the game showed us that last cutscene because I’ve played games that wouldn’t have

The thing I probably loved the most about this game was the atmosphere, especially folsense's. Wandering around the streets at night looking for clues about the box whilst hearing that music was so immersive to me back in the day, and it still is!

Curious village never got translated into Dutch, so I first played diabolical box as a child. Luke trying to rip of Chelmey's face never made sense to me until I found out there was an earlier game.

It’s been said so many times before but Layton’s outward distress over losing Claire again is just supremely good character development. Layton is a thoroughly likeable and charming protagonist but he always has his shit so uncannily together that he seems almost inhuman. Letting all the emotion and vulnerability out in one shocking burst has embedded him and this game in my memory for over a decade and likely for the rest of my gaming life.

It makes me so nostalgic. I cannot even recalll how many hours i've spent playing these games. i remember the finale in Azran legacy made me cry so hard, because it felt like the end of an era, and, ultimately, the end of my childhood.

I've yet to come across any other Nintendo game series where the production team got the gameplay, character design, music, voice acting, atmosphere, AND cutscenes so perfect. You can really tell they paid attention to every detail of the game. Of course the music is probably one of the best bits about these games; relaxing yet catchy and thought provoking at the same time. I love the Professor Layton games so much, they'll always be very nostalgic for me. Thanks for uploading these.

I tear up every time I hear Sofia reading her final letter. (T_T) I haven't played every single Layton game, but Diabolical Box, Unwound Future, and Last Specter are my favorites. I enjoyed this retrospective very much.
