I remember playing a Sonic game on a friend's Dreamcast. He was telling me how there were more characters than Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. He had such a passion on his eyes and voice. Later on it was revealed that he was my first introduction to furries.

I had always wondered why I knew this music despite never playing the game . . It turns out when I was a infant my sister used to play this game when ever I cried. She always told me the music and sounds immediately cheered me up and stopped my crying . Sonic the hedgehog has literally been my comfort sence a baby and is still at age 22

"The open sky, is blue forever. No matter how bad things get, the beautiful blue sky will always be there." That's truly a beautiful quote, no joke. Thanks for being you Liam Triforce.

Palmtree panic bad future jp is easily one of my favorites for how well it conveys the desolation that you failed to prevent. It's harsh, oppressive, and elements from the present version are present but distorted. It does a great job at making you feel bad for failing so early Playing this game for the first time, not knowing that I could influence the future, and arriving in PP bad future is a moment that will live with me forever. The contrast between the present (and even the past) and the bad future is awesome Also, it's a fucking banger

I actually played sonic adventure for the first time this year and I really enjoyed it, and in my opinion it has actually aged really well.

The first time I played Sonic CD for Sonic Gems Collection, I hated it. The whole setup was confusing. I couldn't wrap my head around the interface and such. Then the whole Future/Past Mechanic made me feel like I wasn't making any progress. Now, that I learned the whole history and development of the game, I can enjoy it.

I remember buying the sonic mega collection, it was so random. I remember being at a CVS on mother's day looking for a gift for her, but also saw it for 20 bucks and grabbed that along with flowers 😭 that was a fun day

I remember being a little boy, in the late 90s, and seeing this game on Genesis before the Dreamcast came out. Total nostalgia! :)

You got me all emotional over here dude, the whole section around 25:01 is something I deeply resonate with. I didn’t get to experience Sonic CD as a kid, but I grew up on the mega collection and it truly changed my life forever. I remember being a lonely 7 year old sitting in front of the Xbox trying to beat these games for hours a day. I made unforgettable memories playing these games and sitting and listening to the soundtrack of the mega collection extras section, and it’s why now at 21 years old, I still play and love these games over and over. There is something truly magical about these games

Why didn't Shadow remember Maria's last words? Probably because he woke up from a 50 year sleep. Fk sake man, most humans wake up from a 30 min nap unable to remember their own name.

God I fucking love this soundtrack so much. True story: Sonic CD is what made me go and hunt down a Sega CD in the first place when I first started retro-collecting about 10 years ago.

One really interesting quote I heard once is that "the first time you play a sonic level will be the worst time." Because you're just seeing the level for the first time, and Sonic is ALL ABOUT replayablity and getting better and better. It's REWARDING to go back and BREEZE through the level and find secrets and get that higher ring count. Sonic is one of those rare games that are better on replay.

This is awesome! It’s the first time I’ve heard most of these tracks, well done.

It's due to a lack of re-releases that it's a lesser-sung masterpiece than the other classics, not because people thought it was bad. It received widespread critical acclaim the moment it came out, it's just modern detractors who parrot what they read online instead of just exploring all the game has to offer themselves. It must've been frustrating for you seeing all these drone-minded takes on your favourite game, so I'm happy for you on the success of this essay!

This is the greatest gift I gave my nephews. 4&5 years old. They would both chant seeeegaaa in the opening credits, the 4 year old would yell sonic if he heard me playing it and come in. They love the cartoon and drive me crazy constantly restarting the game so I have to do that damn pinball level over and over again lol. I’m taking them to go see the movie when it comes out. I hope they still like it.

My household never owned a Nintendo console back when I was young, me and my brothers had a Mega Drive, Sonic 1+2 (with 3 and Sonic and Knuckles down the line) and a compilation cart with Streets of Rage and Columns on it. I absolutely adored how crunchy and grungy the Mega Drive's sound chip was and Chemical Plant Zone's music will always live rent-free in my subconsious. It was only till the Gamecube that we got a Nintendo console in the house, but Sega always wormed itself back into my life with SA2 Battle and Super Monkey Ball taking up my play time. Now, I look back to those days while playing Yakuza and Sonic Mania. Once a Sega kid, always a Sega kid.

1 year later but I really think this is a solid, dense essay engaging with not just Sonic CD but "philosophy" of game design in a way I find tantalizing. Questions like whether or not emergent or structured design is "correct" and the trade-offs of freedom. While I can't agree on everything (the Wacky Workbench generator placement is downright silly) I think this is a solid piece of game analysis. I only wish it was easier to send to people because 8 hours is a big investment. Thanks for the mini-review of one of my favorite games of all time (NiGHTS). I did not expect that!

Speaking about the 16-bit Sonics, their perceived strengths at the time of release (which were, admittedly, mostly presentational) have diminished over the decades, making their flaws more obvious in hindsight. I remember the Christmas when I got Sonic 2, and my whole family was blown away. We were EXTREMELY happy with the game.

Seeing the video's preview date be "7 Years Ago" makes it seem so long ago... But this is from fucking 2013

That was such a heart warming video, I usually NEVER post coments, but I've discovered video games with Sonic, and the classic era have been sticking with me for like 15 years. I had forgot how good they were and the impact they had on me, but this reminded me all of this, and now it makes me want to play Sonic 3 again, still one of the best games ever for me. Thank you so much for doing such a video!

Damn, I never realized how far I got into Sonic 2 as a kid. Looking back it's one of those games that I feel like I was too young to properly play, like maybe I did the first 2 or 3 levels but couldn't go further than that. But now I'm remembering all of these levels...
