Man, to be 9 years old again and having Bowser as the biggest stress in my life. 90's kids, I LOVE YOU. KEEP GOING!!!

"I had the pleasure of growing up with it on my Nintendo DS" You're way too young to have this deep of a voice.

I will always remember playing the demo at a blockbuster as a kid. The smell of the story, the feeling of playing this game for the first time. I couldn't believe something like this was possible. Getting the system and game for Christmas still sticks to my memory

I'm in a weird place with Ocarina of Time. I can honestly still play it through the eyes of a kid even 20+ years later. I don't worry about restrictions. I just do things the way I want to. Of course it's not the same, though. It lacks the original majesty. Hyrule Field is basically a dead wasteland. I know where all the secrets are. The camera can be restrictive and annoying at times. But I can still plow through it like I did when I was a kid. I don't worry about the Skultullas. I don't worry about the minigames unless they're really necessary. I don't bother with 100% collecting the heart containers because it'd just be a drag. I just sit back to enjoy one of my favorite games.

My first experience with SM64 was actually with the DS remaster, which had several gameplay additions and tweaks. For example, you start as Yoshi, and unlock Mario, Luigi and Wario as playable characters as you progress, each with their own strengths and unique power up you can get from the "!" Blocks. You even hear Mario say "Bye bye!" If you close the DS while it was on. :D I must've put in at least 400 hours into that game as a kid.

My mom figured out Blast The Wall when I was 6 years old. I stayed home sick from school and I remember asking her to help me. First time she ever played a video game.

I will never forget the days of my childhood when I played Super Mario 64 on my fathers N64. Oh how I miss those days...😞

Id give anything to go back for a day to 96 when I was like 8 and play this game with my buddy who was killed can't even describe the fun we had with it. The music and figuring out new stars. Man. I can almost remember the smell of his room when I hear some of the songs in this game . Good times

To be honest there's a lot of game like this from my childhood I'd give an arm and a leg to experience for the first time again. Some games stay with you for life, but you can only really experience the joy and magic of that first time when everything about them is brand new once. Replaying them can recapture some of that magic but it's never quite the same as it was that first time. Maybe one day we'll figure out how to have that joy again.

That "24 years and one month" bit kind of gave me chills. I know it's a coincidence, but it's still kind of crazy to think about lmao.

I feel bad for you that you didn't get the full revolutionary Mario 64 experience in the 90's. I like the DS version too but playing Mario 64 when it was new was an indescribable joy that I don't think newcomers will ever get to feel. I was 5 years old when I first saw the game and I literally froze up in awe, my jaw completely dropped and I could not stop staring. The jump from SMB to Mario 64 was just too unreal, it felt like a dream.

it's crazy how i will revisit music from games from when i was a little kid but can't care much about music in new games. there's a certain magic to how it sounds and what the overall feel was, just like with aquatic ambience in donkey kong country

Speedrunning is the reason I still love Super Mario 64. I can see where someone playing it casually for the first time since they were a kid in the year 2020 would find it pretty boring. All the tricks and glitches that go into the speedruns make it way more fun to watch/play for me

I've always felt that Mario 64 is the game that perfectly encapsulated "videogame magic", not only through it's gameplay, but how fun it was to talk about it with friends. So many good memories.

In regards to you talking about players mostly wanting to do clean sweeps of stages: I would have hated that as a kid, when I first played SM64. I absolutely played a stage, got one or two stars, and then immediately went running around trying to find a new stage. The fun was navigating the world, and seeing what was around the corner. I still play it this way, tending to pinball from one stage to the next. If the game forced me to - or strongly persuaded me to - do all of the stars in a stage before accessing the next, I would hate it. That sort of linearity is probably the only thing I dislike about the Mario games that came before this one.

Played this game for the first time when I was 8 years old in 1998. I instantly fell in love with this song the first time I heard it in Jolly Roger's Bay, and the sheer excitement of discovering that undersea cave and hearing the drum track kick in is something I'll never forget. That summer when I'd go swimming in our neighborhood pool, I always played this song in my head whenever I'd go underwater as well. Great game, great track, great memories 🤟💙

I’m old… I was 8 when this game came out and spent a majority of my first year experience with it messing with Mario’s face in the menu! Lol after watching my older brother play some more I understood what the mission was and spent YEARS trying to complete it until he gave me his copy of ocarina of time and many more years spent on my N64… my favorite console of all time

I didn't have a gaming console when I was a kid, so I would only get to play Mario 64 at friends houses or doctors office waiting rooms and such. So it was always short gaming sessions and a long time between them, which made it so every time I played it was always new and exciting.

I grew up with the DS version, and it 100% solidified my love for exploratory games. Also, love the Red vs Blue name drop, one of my favorite shows <3

I'm pretty sure the 'booting you from the level' was a workload management decision. Letting the player stay in the level increases the complexity of the state tracking they have to do to prevent things like sequence breaking for the missions. It's much easier from a design and programming standpoint to just clear the memory and start from a known good state.
