Super Mario Bros. 3 - Overworld Theme
Memories:
-
I remember being on the waiting list to rent this game and asking my mother to call every hour to see if it came in yet. I was wanting to play it so bad. My father came home from the training exercises (military) and I told him that we were waiting for it but I didn’t think we were going to get it that day. He told me that it was unfortunate, but he got me something that he hoped would make me feel better. He opened his bag and gave me my own copy of SMB3. We played that game all day. That is one of my favorite memories as a kid.

For a 100% category, over an hour record, to go down only 17% over the course of almost 2 decades, the original record was an absolute masterpiece for its era.

28 years since this game released when I was 10 yrs old, I still get these tunes in my head from time to time! Especially @47:57

I’ll never forget this game. I was in college when it came out and had a solid B in calculus. I got the game and ended up with a D.

Over 30 years later and Super Mario Bros 3 remains the best Mario game ever, Super Mario World as a close second.

My cousin and I spent hours playing this. One time, she wanted to play through the entire game without using the warp whistle and on the last level, I accidentally bumped the game system and it reset the entire game. She got so mad that she unplugged the controller and chased me through the house with the cord yelling that she was going to kill me. About 20 years later, we still laugh about it and she included that in her maid of honor speech at my wedding.

I'm honestly really impressed that the first person to record this speed run was within 15 minutes of the world record 17 years later. Usually people don't do that well right out the gate.

Would like to remember the kids here that Bowser was still called King Koppa on this game

I will never forget when my cousin got this for his birthday. We didn't even eat the cake and ran straight to the Nintendo with a magic excitement. We used to get in trouble for sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night just to play. So many amazing memories and still play it to this day.

I remember getting this game for Christmas in 91. I woke up at 4am. Went to the tree to see my new game laid in all its glory. I played quietly untill my family woke up. What a magical time

<3 100% was such a fun run to practice and perform. I don't remember if I realized at the time that I had beaten the record in 2011. lol. When the Fire Mario strats started being refined and critical is when I started to lose interest, mainly due to the stress involved in keeping up with my practice. 47:05 -- I get to see Kirua's face for the first time! (I think)

It's 3am. I haven't played this game in years but I'm up listening at 23:58 because it's stuck in my head and I couldn't sleep til I listened to it. It's amazing how these video game songs stick with ya

I remember being allowed to skip school that day to stand in line at my local Toys R Us to grab my copy of SMB3. I can still recall the energy in that line. People young and old were literally buzzing. Man, I miss those yellow slips that you would take to the video game cage.

One of the best games I've ever played. After 30+ years, it still gives me hours of fun and enjoyment.

The nights spent playing this game while my mom listens to radio and walks around the house. It's such a mundane memory, yet one that I treasure so dearly.

This stuff is SO nostalgic for me. I watched many of the older runs live on twitch a decade ago, or on SDA even before that. Shoutouts to David "Marshmallow" Gibbons being an absolute granddaddy of speedrunning for like a whole decade. I watched all his old stuff in high school.

WHAT A JAM!!! First played this game when I was 3, I will always love it. It absolutely blew my mind when I found out how to find and use the magic whistles. I like the music in the warp world btw, it’s so hypnotic. World 8 is crazy dude. I love floating to the clouds as the Tanuki. I used to eat habenero peppers and play this at a friends house. What a beautiful game 10/10

SMB 3 is truely a timeless masterpiece. My brother abd I spent so many hours playing tgis game. I could never get past the "angry sun level" as a kid. The accomplishement I felt beating the first ship I will never forget. I felt like I grew up a bit that day.

I was one of those kids that didn’t have a baseball bat aka Nintendo and resorted to renting the console. One of those rentals accidentally came with Super Mario Bro’s 3 cartridge inside. I knew the rental place had no idea and for some reason I put it back in hoping the next kid without a baseball bat would be as surprised as I was to find one of the best games ever inside. I kinda wish I would have kept it but still hopeful that someone else got to tell the same story. With love respect appreciation thank you.

I’ve always found it fascinating how one developers mistake/laziness from 30 years ago can lead to a brutally difficult exploit that costs speedrunners countless hours of their lives

Worlds 6, 7, and 8 were the bane of my existence as a kid. I could never beat them. The W8 first airship was NNNNNNGGGGGAAAAAHHH, W7 had one level I consistently got turned around in, and W6... the ice level... ARGH...
