I think you should have mentioned that, while traversing Castle Oblivion, Sora entered a world he could not actually remember, and that he had not been to in Kingdom Hearts 1 (Twilight Town). Minor thing, but worth mentioning, I think. Besides that, great recap!

kingdom hearts is literally a fever dream that never feels real to me, but also is one of the best things ever because i absolutely love disney and seeing disney and jrpgs having a baby was one of the best discoveries I have ever made. this game is peak and is the embodiment of child wonderment and good game mechanics. banger game.

Honestly the GBA version feels better. The GBA cries with this game. It's one of those games that pushes its limits. That being said, the GBA version can also be broken, I remember getting the Crescendo enemy card (loudmouth) early that buffs summon cards. Then you just spam Cloud Omni Slash, it does so much damage that it is unreal. The only thing that feels better in the remake are the attack cards sleights. In the original, bosses are programmed to dodge every attack card sleight that you can use, except sonic blade.

Aerith's warning about not letting his emotions get the better of him echoes through the rest of the series. In Re:Coded they mention as long as Sora has his allies he'll be able to handle the secrets held within his heart, but in Dream Drop Distance the first thing that happens is that he's cut off from everyone, and with no one to aid him his memories and emotions take him down the path to darkness.

I see everyone else had the same experience I did growing up: Riku 4 was a nightmare because we all didn’t understand how 0 cards work. Now? He (like a lot of the bosses honestly) are fairly easy to cheese once you understand the mechanics

Oh man nice summary! Touching on the weird details that makes it confusing, while keeping it lean enough to keep the main plotline straightforward. In some circles, the story of Kingdom Hearts gets no respect nowadays, for some reason. But I think it still holds up as great. With all its complexity, childishness, campy dialogue, absurdity, and big emotions. It's all part of the charm in creating this delicious stew of adventure that's completely unique. There ain't no story like Kingdom Hearts.

I played it for the first time last year and I stumbled apon a IG reel of a man using Traverse town theme from KH1 and it was so nostalgic to me. It’s so special to my heart (no pun intended). KH has easily became my favorite series of all time.

The OG Chain of Memories had a versus mode. It promised that if you put enough hours into the game, you could essentially bully a lesser player into submission with unbreakable sleights for 3 full minutes.

I finally found a review where someone LIKES Chain of Memories! I seriously think this game is way too overhated by the community just for the sole purpose of a new gameplay style. I personally didn’t mind the card system and I loved how adult and great the story and even expanding the progression from KH1 was. This game clearly had a lot of love and ambition put into it and why people keep bashing on this game is beyond me. Although COM is a good game, I would be lying if I didn’t say it wasn’t the worst in the original trilogy

Kingdom hearts is probably one of my fav jrpgs series and I even though I never played it as a kid. I played it recently as an adult in my maybe 18 - 20 time period and i genuinely loved it. Every game has its flaws of course but each game usually has something that somewhat brings me to tears. I remember finishing 1 thinking wow this couldn’t get any better, when 2 knocked me straight out my socks. Just hearing tracks like fragments of sorrow or the other promise just genuinely put me in such a mood.

Kingdom hearts rechain of memories is the first Kingdom Hearts game I had started and finished, surprisingly what made it good to me was the story and the card system

Re: Chain of Memories is as different from Kingdom Hearts I, as it is quirky, as it is… good! Were it a standalone game, I’m sure it would be a cult classic of sorts

I really enjoy your story mode playthroughs. I'm actually not a big fan of Let's Plays with the Completionist being the only youtube show of that kind I regularly watch. I really like watching someone play the game but comment more on the story and characters than on what is immediately happening on screen, and Kingdom Hearts was one of my favorite games in middle school so that helps too. Really looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 2. It's the last game I played in the franchise and is still my favorite.

I always felt like Riku’s part was a lot easier than Sora’s since the game always provides you what you need to make it through. With Sora, the end game can be a struggle if you don’t get some of the more powerful cards. You don’t have that issue with Riku.

As a kid. Growing up with KH2 as my introduction to the series, was breathtaking. After beating KH2, I would get my hands on the GBA version, just to understand what happened between KH1 & KH2. And boy it sure was dark, especially playing it on handheld. Sora’s story was proof that sometimes he lets his anger run wild, whenever someone he cares gets treated like a puppet. Riku’s on the other hand is proof that people like him can be redeemed after succumbing to darkness. All in one, both versions of the game are good❤️💙🔑👑⚔️

I first got into the series through Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories (bought it from a garage sale in 2007/08) and I fell in love with the game and into the series. Replayed the original game 5-6 times already. Played re:com thrice, but struggling to get through the original KH a second time. I loved experimenting with the different sleights available in both versions. Tornado to me was by far the most effective way of clearing battles! Hated how they nerfed moogle points dropping by re-entering a room in re:com though. Made the game wayyy more grindy
