Mario Kart 64 - Rainbow Road
Memories:
-
The racing game from my childhood... that I played by myself. Man, some things just don't change.

The n64 was the epicenter of my childhood with my friends…Mario kart, smash bros, goldeneye, the list goes on. That was a fantastic system with so many memorable games.

With all those new tracks in MK8D I hope they'll also bring back the fantastic battle mode levels from MK64. I basically spent my childhood there.

I have good memories of this game with my brothers, but my dad hated when we played video games. One time he caught us playing this together with my mom and he slammed his fist on top of the cartridge into the n64 to try to break it. He was mad because we weren’t reading the Bible when he got home.

I played 4-player MK64 growing up, then during university, and even now it has never gotten old. I actually prefer it over MK8 tbh.

Yeah, I used to play this with my dad all the time. He was always Wario and I was Bowser - I used to think those two were best friends, so he played along with it. I played it when I was only three years old in 98' when I learned how to use the N64 controller. I've kept it ever since. The soundtrack, to me, is so creative with the few instruments they used, the drifting is how I learned to drift in the other Karts (except for the SNES - that one was hard!), and it's what got me started in gaming, period. Not just the N64, one of the best consoles ever, but everything. My N64 is just about 20 years old, and it sits on my shelf as one of my prized possessions. :)

I got this game for Christmas- the Japanese version in 1996 I believe. My Dad somehow brought my N64 to a shop to modify it so it could play Japanese imports. It was the first year I knew "the truth" about Santa Claus and it just blew my mind to have a game none of my friends had and had it so early. To this day it remains my favorite Mario Kart game.

This entire soundtrack is the definition of nostalgia for me. Reminds me of the good times: Childhood friends, late nights, pizza, WWF, Rugrats toys, Christmas time, summer vacation, trips to the zoo.. Such a precious time.

Mario Kart 64 was such an important part of my childhood. You had to be there in 1997 playing split screen battle mode and experiencing your first grand prix. It was a mind blowing experience coming out of the Genesis and SNES era. The nostalgia for MK64 hits just as hard as Super Mario 64.

Even though MK8 has recently taken my spot for favorite Mario Kart since 64, this game still has, and probably will always have my favorite OST in Mario Kart.

Such an amazing soundtrack, especially for the time. What, whoa, why don't I remember that Win Screen secret? Neat!

I'll be honest, I've played a LOT of Mario Kart games across the series (I grew up with Double Dash, Wii, DS, and 7), and I really don't like Mario Kart 64's controls. You said it was very good and most people will probably get the hang of it by Lap 2 of their first race, but I honestly can't say I agree. I've tried to pick up Mario Kart 64 multiple times, but even after playing a couple Grand Prixs, I just can't control my driver well. I'm always flying into the grass, drifting the wrong way, slamming into every wall. I just can't pick up this game's controls at all, and I'm not sure why.

How such a bad racing game could have been so good in my memory. Don't try to replay it guys, it is just horrible. Live it in your memories!

The pre-rendered sprites continue to impress me to this day. They're shockingly smooth with lots of a frames for something from the late 90s.

My bro gave me his N64 when I was about nine or ten, and I played the heck out of SM64 and MK64. I credit those games for getting me obsessed with Mario :) So Chris, wherever you are, thanks for helping me become a Nintendork. :)

I thought this was going to be relaxing, but it just makes me tense, just like when i was playing the game in the 90's against friends and family.

Rainbow Road is the best track. Only the ones who played this game when it was released know the emotion of finishing it in that course.

As a kid, playing battle mode with 3 other people was some of the most fun I'd ever had playing video games at the time. I think only Mario Kart DS has a better battle mode.

Super Mario Kart will always have a special place in my gaming room just for the nostalgia of playing that game for around 3-4 years nonstop between all us neighborhood kids that had a Super Nintendo between 1993-1996 BEFORE the N64 released in the US. So many memories tied to “Time Trials” & “Battle Mode” & our small neighborhood sharing ONE Cart between like 2-3 different houses.
