Gen 1 had this sense of mysteriousness and creepiness that has never been repeated in any game. I loved it. Finding Mewtwo after reading about his dark origin was crazy when I was a kid. And even after playing tons of Pokémon over the years, the cubone momma dying is still the most tragic thing that has happened in any Pokémon game I’ve played. RIP

For the longest time as a kid, I thought the guy guarding cerulean cave was one of those British soldiers wearing one of those tall hats. But then he moved and I realized it was just the cave opening lined up perfectly with his head line.

Remember to this day how none of my parents wanted to buy me the game for my Gameboy. My grandmother just picked me up one day, drove to the store and said. "Pick your game." I was so damn happy the entire day. She was always the one person in my life who never doubted my decisions and just were friendly all the time. Tried to support me whatever i tried to accomplish in life. Years ago she passed away. 2 years later i get diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. If i do live to have my own children or grandchildren, i will try my best to support them to. Just because i know how frustrating it can be, when no one wants to acknowledge your personality.

I remember balling my eyes out before getting chased out of town, when everybody you'd rescued so far came up and had your back. I was 6. Life was simpler back then.

Yup, I was there back in 98/99 when this took off. To understand why you have to know there was nothing else like this on handhelds at the time, all we had was simple games like Tetris and Dr. Mario and then suddenly comes along this epic 50+ hour RPG that made you go through a set of batteries almost every DAY! This was the first handheld game that turned peoples attention from playing minutes at a time to several hours at a time and from what I could tell back then it was the system seller, it was the main reason most people owned Gameboys.

I remember interpreting “if you lose against the elite four, you have to start over” as new game start over. After a ridiculous amount of grinding while watching my Saturday morning cartoons, 6 year old me lost and was briefly mortified.

My grandmother bought me red version when I was a kid. She passed away just over 3 years ago. She was the main parent of my life, and after these past few years, this hits harder then probably all other nostalgic feelings I've had with any other game. I miss her terribly, but this honestly brings me tears of joy, as if I'm still sitting in her big green oversized chair still playing. Thank you for this, it may not have been your intentions but this gives me happiness that can't be explained.

I remember the day when you had to leave your base and everyone behind because you were a fugitive, and you woke up earlier than everyone else to escape, and I remember being courageous enough to go into town and finding everyone asleep. I went to the bank and laughing so hard because Persian was depositing my money in her sleep , and Kanghaskan was still storing and withdrawing objects for me in her sleep as well. I was like 8.

When I was a kid I had no idea I had to save the game everytime I turned off the Game Boy. I started all over again for several weeks before I learned what that Save button did.

As for "stories made up by children", my sister wouldn't let me play Pokémon blue at some point because when the player misses the cruise the game tells you there won't be another one for a year, and my sister was waiting for it to arrive again. Eventually I got ourselves out of that, and continued the game, but I still think fondly of my sister waiting for the cruise. Only inexperienced kids would take that seriously, oh how I miss those times.

This makes me cry.. Just of how much the world has changed. This makes me wish I could live in 1996 as a 12 year old boy playing on the gameboy playing pokemon red (Or Blue). This is the BEST pokemon game ever to be made. No doubt. So SO SO SO much nostalgia.

The reason you had to save the game to swap boxes was because of memory limitations on the GameBoy. Only one box was actively kept in RAM at one time; the other boxes were in the save RAM and needed to be swapped in and out. As such, it necessitated a full save. It was quite obnoxious, but unfortunately quite necessary. Luckily modern systems have more than enough RAM to avoid this problem.

What a time to be alive this was. All the early mornings and late nights playing Pokemon Blue as a kid, trading with the link cable, harassing my friend for a Mew, collecting Pokemon cards and watching the TV show on Saturday mornings without fail. Damn I miss the old days.

Pallet town's music makes me tear up. It's the theme song of innocence and naiveness. Nothing to worry about except dead AA batteries and not having enough light to see the screen. Being an adult sucks sometimes...

Bruh, the sense of achievement I got as an 8 year old finally getting through Rocket HQ/Silph Co and Victory Road was immense. The more I listen to you discuss the battle mechanics the more I realise just how much Red and Blue shaped my play style to the point I really, really struggle to adapt to modern competitive play. I'm still completely obsessed with type coverage over everything else.

Listening to the music makes ne think, how many people have grew up with a song that was so calming, relaxing, even just upbeat and the older you get the less of a song it is and more of a nursery rhyme or a kind of anthem. Its weird to think about because the way this entire soundtrack is laid out i can imagine a playthrough of the game in my head and real life events that have happened and i would listen to bits of the music for whatever mood i was in. I hope someone can feel that way with any game/ soundtrack.
