Super Smash Bros. Melee - Opening
Memories:
-
I remember telling my mom I was having nightmares about Ganondorf, so for a few days she wouldn't let me play. So my brother helped me combat it by telling me Link defeated him. So then in my dreams Link just kept killing him each time by stabbing him in my dreams, and that's how he became my favorite smash bros character. The mind is a crazy thing

Its difficult to describe what it is like to go from a console that could only handle a couple polygons to a console that could display the threads on marios jeans and on top of that offer a game that let you play as a video game villain (first time we ever got to play as Bowser or Ganondorf) and a handful of famous nintendo reps all in on game. This game really was amazing and the timing of its release was perfect.

I always called Melee "the season finale of Nintendo." It felt like a culmination of the N64 era, with everything on the line for middle school-aged me. It really inspired me as the fanfic writer I am today, and how I think about games.

I received this CD with my Nintendo Power magazine when I was I child. I never thought I'd hear it again though... Thank you for bringing back the memories.

I once went to the pawn shop for a GameCube memory card for Mario sunshine, and found a save file for 100% COMPLETE SMASH BROS MELEE. I am so lucky.

I still can't believe this game is 15 years old already. Such an amazing game.

Melee is like one big creepypasta. For those that didn't have Internet (and even if you did you'd have unreliable information), all of these unlocks and strange changes would feel like you were going nuts. "And this one time out of nowhere, Luigi killed Mario!" "Then Bowser came back onto the stage and turned into a monster! Did I mention the SECOND Master Hand??" Even the seemingly random nature of character unlocks would feel bizarre. (I can only attest to the characters, I was never good enough as a kid for the wacky stuff)

I remember when me and my brother had no idea that there were secret characters, we would play the game regularlly, we had just gotten it. I, on accident, finished the first level. AND LUIGI APPEARED AND IT BLEW OUR MINDS!

Imagine everyones' reaction here if they showed off Mewtwo and Ganondorf. People would be mind blown at the sight of Mewtwo here because I know myself and a lot of others were the first time we unlocked him in the game.

I think the Gamecube was one of the best consoles ever made. I still prefer its controller over any other. Except maybe Playstation.

the Gamecube in general had a vibe no other console could replicate. it truly felt like years of gaming had all led up to Melee, a celebration of everything Nintendo up to that point. while Brawl was my first Smash game and will always hold a special place in my heart, much of its content owes a debt of gratitude to Melee.

I can't really describe the emotions I'm feeling having just found this. Every piece is so faithful and wonderful... Edit: Tears literally just fell out of my eyes at that extension of the intro at 29:19

50 years from now I could probably hear the "WARNING Challenger Approaching!" sound and still get goosebumps. Every. Time.

Man, I'm SO glad that this was recorded and archived. Maybe it sounds stupid to some, but this really is an historic moment in Nintendo/video game/pop culture and I still get goosebumps every time I watch it.

Melee was my CHILDHOOD! I played Melee definitely a lot more than Brawl or even SSB4.

The “Challenger Approaching” screen was absolutely SINISTER and triggered my fight or flight response as a kid 😂

I could never read music as a kid, no matter how much I tried. I received this CD and ended up destroying it by constantly rewinding to learn how to play music by ear. Teachers didn't teach me how to play music. This CD, and video games in general, did. I would prop my Game Boy Advance on the sheet stand of my synthesizer and spend hours learning.

In the year 2006, I was 4 years old. I don’t remember exactly when, but my parents got me a GameCube with a few games, the first was smash bros melee. The intro blew me away despite not knowing any of the characters or locations but it had a lasting impact on me. The only thing I really knew about video games back then was Pokemon and let me tell you, seeing mewtwo’s silhouette on the challenger approaching screen made me jump. Melee is etched into the very fabric of my soul and if not for it I might’ve been a very different person today.

I loved this soundtrack growing up playing the hell out of this game. 18 years later, I now use this for my workout/training music while at the gym for a couple of hours. There's certain songs like Captain Falcon that just kicked ass, and makes you want to get that extra rep on the bench press, or run that extra mile.

OKAY SO I'm not the only one who's like "This game is fucking creepy as hell." The Failure screen is still creepy all these years later.
