Something that might be fun to explore is the idea of "flow" in a 2d platformer. The idea that a level encourages you to move forward at all times, and rewards you for being on the edge the whole time. Donkey Kong and Dust Force do that well, but I think the best example is Rayman Legends, I can't count how many times I felt like a speedrunner in that game through natural gameplay.

I (17) and my brother (16) played this game together a few years ago. It was just brilliant. The levels are atmospheric - mainly because David Wise is a genius, but also because the background, the desine, the theme and everything else about each level are just perfect. Also the game is fairly long, challenging, and absolutely satisfying. I love this game and I worship it's music.

I love the restored version of the soundtrack, but there's definitely a charm in the compression of the SNES samples. I remember an old Game Informer podcast interview with David Wise where he explained how he selected certain synths and instruments specifically because they sounded good if not better after going through the filters and compression for the SNES. It probably is the best soundtrack on the system whether it's the restored or classic version.

The original trilogy is probably one of best controlling games of all time: the abundance of frames, the near-zero lag provided by the CRT TV and wired controller, it's just another level of controllability. While emulation and lcd panels have come a long way, if you ever have the chance to play the DK trilogy how it was meant to be played: on original hardware with a CRT TV, don't lose the chance, you'll have a great time! Plus, the SNES sound chip sounds freaking amazing and DK squeezed and pushed the chip to the limit, the soundtrack legit gives me goosebumps.

And that's the end of another amazing series of retrospectives! This game is absolutey incredible. One of the greatest 2d platformers of all time, and one of Nintendo's best creations. It's gorgeous, plays amazingly, has fantastic level design, and oozes charm. I was similar to you that I wasn't blown away with this game at first, but over the years I've come to realize how good this game really is. Great job with this series of reviews man, your stuff gets better and better with each vid!

This. music. is. epic. So freaking inspiring. Absolutely one of the best tunes in this game. For some reason, it reminds me of that ice dragon who froze DK Island. I've always wished that dragon had a bigger role in this game, since I'm a big fan of dragons.

I know many people are a bit irked at the amount of Wii U ports the Switch is getting, but if there's any game that deserves to be on the Switch, it's this game! It's really criminal that such a masterpiece went unnoticed. The Switch already has a ton of users, so giving this game a new chance on this console would be surely appreciated. Heck, right now I feel like the Switch is kinda lacking on tight platformers (a rare sight on any Nintendo hardware), aside from Shovel Knight. Hopefully we get to see this wonderful game rise from obscurity, I'm sure I'd pick it up for the Switch.

I was super excited for this game when it originally came out. It was my first year of college, and I remember starting the download that morning before going to classes for the day. I treasure this game. It's the best modern 2d platformer. Period. The addition of the best Nintendo character, Funky Kong, just makes the best game better.

Tropical Freeze is a masterpiece. Retro made me cry in some levels, for the first time i had a Donkey Kong Country game actually better if compared with the original trilogy by Rare. And i always say that Nintendo could learn from Retro for the next Mario 2d platformer. DKC: Tropical Freeze > DKC 2 > DKC > DKC 3 > DKC Returns

I fell in love the second I started playing and the game just kept getting better! I've bought this for two friends, partially as an excuse to play through it again with them. I don't think I'd ever be able to accurately put into a review how immensely huge a place in my heart this game has, so I appreciate hearing others talk about it. I agree that the bonus rooms are still kind of disappointing and I also never remember to use the Kong POW, but damn if you aren't right about there not being a single bad level and I wouldn't hesitate a second to call it perfect nevertheless.

Nostalgia. Got this game when it originally came out on the Wii U on release day (Almost 7 years in 3 days, Happy 7th Anniversary!) Played the entire game, loved the music. Then got it on the switch when Nintendo ported it, and played the entire game again. This is probably one of the best games Nintendo published that has a great soundtrack. All of the worlds in the game have their own taste in music. Favorite Donkey Kong game ever. Fantastic job Nintendo & David Wise.
